Accreditation

Our many programs throughout the College of Education and Human Services are not only regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission but also maintain national, professional accreditations. Our programs in recreation, the second largest such program in the U. S., hold dual national accreditation by both the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) and the American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation (AAPAR), a distinction held by few departments in the nation. Our Dietetics program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE).

Established in 1892 as the second Normal School, or teachers college, in the state of Michigan, teacher education has remained at the core of the university’s mission. Our education programs are fully approved by the Michigan Department of Education and are accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), in which we hold charter membership. Our teacher preparation programs were particularly pleased this fall 2007 to receive an “exemplary performance” rating from the Michigan Department of Education, the highest level possible. Central received the maximum number of points in the majority of categories used, including Michigan Test for Teacher Certification pass rates by our students, a high response and review rate on an electronic survey sent to graduates to assess their satisfaction with CMU’s teacher preparation program, the approval status of our certification programs up for review with the state; and the recruitment and preparation of students to teach in high-need content areas.
