Majors and Minors for Teacher Certification

Michigan Teacher Certification requires each candidate to fulfill major and minor requirements in certifiable subjects as designated and defined by the college or university through which the student completes the teacher certification program.

FIND the certifiable CMU majors and minors in the 2004-2005 Undergraduate Bulletin at https://bulletins.cmich.edu/default.asp.  On-screen instructions will guide you through the site, but the summary below will assist you with your research.

  • SELECT-  "Subject", then "Teacher Education, General" to display the alphabetical listing by certifiable major.  Note:  ART is listed as Visual Arts Education.

  • CHOOSE-  the major you wish to explore and the BS in Education for the level of certification you wish to pursue- Secondary or Elementary.

  • CHOOSE- the minor you wish to explore.  You will be required to select a minor or minors.

  • NAVIGATE-  through each section to find the specific course requirements and course descriptions for certifiable majors and minors.

If you DO NOT find a particular major/minor listed, that will mean that CMU DOES NOT offer a certifiable major/minor in that subject.  You can become certified through CMU only in certifiable majors or minors that CMU offers.  For example, CMU does not offer a certifiable major or minor in Psychology.  So, you will not find a listing for Psychology in the BS in Education.

CERTIFICATION INQUIRIES: Formal determination of all certification requirements will be made by the Center for Student Services and by academic departments responsible for preparing major and minor evaluations.  Our office will initiate that process on your behalf if you pursue a formal certification program for "certification only."

If you enroll to pursue a second bachelor's degree, the Bachelor of Science in Education, with certification, you will contact the academic departments directly to obtain major and minor programs.

TRANSFER COURSES:  You may already have completed courses that are equivalents to CMU courses.  Transfer equivalencies for courses completed at schools other than CMU can be found at http://webs.cmich.edu/ctrans.  Then, select the Transfer Credit Equivalency Tables.
