Facts about Teacher Certification In Michigan

Certification in Michigan
Per Senate Bill No. 673 to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled “The Revised
School Code,” the following is an excerpt focused on school
administrator certification in Michigan:
The State Board shall develop a school administrator’s certificate that
may be issued to school district and intermediate school district
superintendents, school principals, assistant principals, and other
administrators whose primary responsibility is administering
instructional programs. An individual is not required …to have a school
administrator’s certificate…
Per the Michigan Department of Education:
Voluntary administrator certification is currently available at two
levels:
1. K-12 (Elementary and Secondary)
Administrator
2. Central Office Administrator—Note:
Central Michigan
University is not currently
approved to recommend this level
of certification. CMU is in the
process
of obtaining this approval.
Michigan administrators who were certified as administrators in Michigan
prior to the suspension of administrator certification and choose to
apply for the new voluntary administrator certification should obtain an
application at
www.michigan.gov/mde.
Instructions for completion are on the application and this is submitted
directly to the Michigan Department of Education.
Out-of State certified administrators who choose to apply for
administrator certification in Michigan should obtain an application at
www.michigan.gov/mde.

Michigan administrators who have completed and an approved administrator
preparation program in Michigan but never held an administrator
certificate should contact the higher education institution where the
program was completed and complete the application process to be
recommended for administrator certification.
For Central Michigan University graduates of Educational Leadership
(masters and specialist degrees in School Principalship) who have not
held an administrative certificate in Michigan, please click on the link
