Facts about Teacher Certification In Michigan

The Michigan Department of Education has mandated by Law PA118, that the new reading requirement is for:

  • Applying for Professional Certificate

Teachers applying for a Professional Certificate on July 1, 2009 or after must complete a three-credit course of study with appropriate field experiences in the diagnosis and remediation of reading disabilities and differentiated instruction.  They will need to complete the new three-credit hour reading requirement during the first six years of their classroom teaching.

The new three-credit hour reading course can be part of a planned eighteen-hour credit program.  Please contact your faculty advisor to have the course added to your program.

Please note that this course may also be completed in the teacher education preparation program for initial certification.  This is an option, not a requirement.

CMU offers EDU 508A-Elementary or EDU508B-Secondary to meet this requirement.  There are other colleges offering reading courses listed in PDF format on the MDE website.

If you have any further questions, please contact the Center for Student Services at (989) 774-3309.
