Provisional Certificate

The provisional certification is the initial teaching license/credential issued in Michigan upon successful completion of an approved teacher preparation program and passage of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC).  In Michigan individuals are required to successfully complete a course in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid prior to being issued an initial teaching certificate.  Central Michigan University will not recommend any teacher candidate for certification without assuring that the CPR and First Aid requirement for certification has been met.  This requirement is effective for any individual seeking initial teaching certification after June 30, 2004.

The provisional certificate is valid for up to 6 years, and can be renewed twice, during which 3 years of successful teaching must be completed along with additional advanced study totaling 18 semester hours in a planned course of study.

The provisional certificates can be renewed twice while planned program, master's degree, or additional major or minor (endorsement) course work is completed.

The first provisional certificate renewal requires 9 credit hours completed toward a CMU planned program, master's degree, or additional major or minor (endorsement).

The second provisional certificate renewal requires 18 credit hours completed toward a CMU planned program, master's degree, or additional major or minor (endorsement).

A provisional certificate renewal application can be obtained here, or by contacting EHS Center for Student Services.
