CMU Midtier Program

Student Expectations and Requirements Fall 2009 Semester:

Throughout the semester students will have opportunity for school and classroom field experiences during which they can:

  1. Observe classroom teachers.
  2. Gain experience in working with individual students and small groups of students.
  3. Experience planning, teaching and evaluation of activities
  4. Develop an awareness of practices used by experienced classroom teachers concerning classroom management and the maintenance of a positive classroom learning environment.
  5. Experience some of the other aspects of teaching such as preparing bulletin boards, developing teaching materials, correcting papers, evaluating projects, and attending special functions.
  6. Develop an awareness of the total school environment.

Midtier Students:

  • Will spend at least 30 hours in a classroom during the Midtier experience.
  • Will follow all policies and practices of the host school.
  • Will record all tasks assigned and, in writing, reflect on their experience with each task on their weekly journal sheet.
  • Will teach two (2) different lessons to the class with the first lesson presented sometime during the 4-6 week and the second during the 7-10th week.
  • Will follow due dates of online journals submitted on Blackboard
  • Each visit will submit attendance record to the host teacher for signature and verification.

Midtier Students Should Not:

  • Be left alone in the classroom as the sole responsible adult in charge.
  • Do excessive photo copying during Midtier hours.
  • Be on the computer unless directed by the host teacher.
  • Be hired as a substitute teacher during actual Midtier hours. Qualified students can however, sub other days if contracted by the school.

All responsibility for attendance record, forms, journal verification and any other Midtier requirements are placed on the Midtier student. All forms will be distributed by the Midtier student including those copies given to the host teacher. The host teacher is never asked to mail or distribute Midtier forms.

The Midtier student should be in the assigned classroom actively participating, learning, and interacting with students and the host teacher. Please notify the Midtier coordinator should any problems occur during the course of this experience. Again, thank you for being part of this important teacher education program.
