VH Endorsement

Who Qualifies: This endorsement is available only to individuals currently holding or eligible for KH certification in the area of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS). If you are a Family Studies Major: Life Management Education major at Central Michigan University, you are eligible for this endorsement.

Why you need the endorsement: A teacher with a VH endorsement is one of the requirements for a secondary FCS program to qualify for added cost state funds. Therefore, schools will be more likely to hire candidates who have this endorsement.

Requirements: Students must complete 200 hours of experience distributed over four areas: Family Services, Children/Youth Services, Consumer Services and Educational Services (50 hours in each area.) The hours may be completed during breaks in the academic year, as part-time or summer employment, or through community service and volunteer opportunities. These hours may be accrued as a part of university-level courses including experiential learning, service learning and volunteer field experiences.

You may count the 45 hour pre-professional experience required to be admitted to the Teacher Education program towards your hours for the Educational Services category if your experience fits into one of the categories; however your mid-tier experience and student teaching do not count towards this endorsement. Additional hours you complete above the number required for your mid-tier experience may also be counted in the Educational Services category.

How to Apply for the Endorsement: Obtain an Application for Vocational/Occupational Education Teaching Certificate from the EHS Center for Student Services Web site: Application. Note: If you apply for your vocational endorsement and your teaching certificate at the same time, you will only pay a fee of $125 (or the current rate) for both. The Michigan Department of Education will send you a bill for this fee.

Completing the Application:

  1. Complete the front and back of the first page of the goldenrod form.
  2. Check “Temporary” for the type of certification on page one.
  3. On the front side of the second page, fill out your name, check “Temporary Vocational” and sign and date the bottom. You do not have to fill in Section I and II with your recent experience. I will attach copies of the forms you have provided to me before I send it over to the Center for Student Services.
  4. List the courses you have completed for the LME major on the back side of the second page. Disregard “Term Hours” unless you have taken a course at another university that uses term hours.
  5. Keep a copy of your completed application and return the original application to Beth Embrey in Wightman 219.
  6. The Center for Student Services will send your application to the Michigan Department of Education in Lansing. Typically, you will receive your endorsement in approximately 7-10 working days.
