The Human Growth and Development Laboratory serves as a training facility for Central Michigan University students enrolled in Human Development and Family Studies courses.  University students are involved in the Lab as student observers, classroom assistants, and student teachers.  The following classes are involved in the Lab:

HEV 303 Human Growth and Development - Preschool and Middle Childhood

Students observe the physical, motor, social, emotional, language, and cognitive development of children.  They take several kinds of observations throughout the semester.  These students are primarily seen in the observation booth and in adult brown chairs in the classroom.  The students attend an observer training at the beginning of each semester.  They are required to only observe the children, not to interact with them.  The observers within the classroom are monitored by the teacher in each classroom.

HEV 402  Guidance and Planning of Programs for Young Children

Students enrolled in this class study techniques for guiding individual, small group and total group activities.  In addition, students study curriculum development and planning for children.  These students are present in the classroom one day per week.  HEV 402 students plan, supervise, and assist with activities.

HEV 409   Preschool Student Teaching Practicum

These students begin as an assistant teacher and gradually assume the role of lead teacher as the semester progresses, including planning parent/teacher conference, and be responsible for overall operation of selected days under the supervision of the teacher.  They attend the preschool sessions two days per week.

HEV 490   Independent Study

These students may come from a variety of backgrounds and are seeking further experience that the Lab can offer.  Independent Study students may work directly with children, plan portfolios, create family bulletin boards, work with the food program, write newsletters, plan professional events and more.

Students from other Departments

Opportunities exist for students from other programs such as Special Education, Communication Disorders, etc., to complete coursework, practicum and independent study assignments in the laboratory.
