Illness

Children who are ill should stay home to protect their own health as well as the health of others. Children displaying one or more of the symptoms listed below should remain at home:

Fever Diarrhea Vomiting Red Watery Eyes
Listless Behavior Sore Throat Severe Cough Eyes showing discharge
Severely sore eyes Ears discharging fluid Runny nose (green discharge) Head Lice

If a child becomes ill during school, the teacher will isolate the child from the group and a staff member will call the parents. If the parents cannot be reached, the teacher will call the other persons listed on the child's information card.

Children sent home because of illness (e.g. fever, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea) must remain at home for 24 hours after the last appearance of the symptoms(s), to watch for further developments.  Parents are asked to repost any illness to the Lab for the protection of other children and staff.

Parents are also asked to notify the Lab immediately when their child is exposed to a communicable disease.  The Lab will post notices of communicable disease reported among children attending the Lab.  The notice will include the date of exposure, symptoms of the disease, and date symptoms should appear.

Parents can check out a web site "Sick Kids and Daycare"  for a chart of diseases, symptoms, transmission, and infectious periods.

Immunizations

Michigan state laws require that children enrolled in child care have received the following immunizations:  DPT, OPV, HIB, MMR, Hep B, and Chicken Pox.  A copy of your child's immunization record or a physician's authorized statement that your child has received the appropriate immunizations must be on file before the child is admitted into the classroom.  The lab is also required to have on file a record of boosters received during the year.

Medication

If it is necessary for a child to take medication at school, please contact your child's teacher.  Medication must be labeled and in the original container.  It will be kept in a locked cupboard unless it requires refrigeration.  Parents will need to place those medications requiring refrigeration in a childproof container for storage in the refrigerator.  Parents will need to sign a form providing instruction and giving permission to administer the medication.  This includes the use of parent provided sunscreen.  (CMU does not provide sunscreen.)

Accidents and Emergencies

Careful supervision is given to the children at all times.  In the event of an accident or emergency, the parent is immediately contacted.  When the parent is unavailable, alternate names on the child's information card are contacted.  If no one can be reached, the child's physician is called to determine what action should be taken.  If the emergency requires immediate medical attention, EMS will be called to transport the child to Central Michigan Community Hospital.
