Welcome to The Qualitative research Clearinghouse! An interdisciplinary team of faculty and students from the departments of Educational Leadership, Human Environmental Studies, The Library, and Recreation, Parks, and Leisure Services Administration have developed this resource in line with Central Michigan University’s commitment to forging a new path to the future through increasing research and scholarly endeavors (including active involvement of students in these processes), standards, and diversity. For decades, quantitative research methods have served as the central, as well as most respected, means of knowledge production, whereas qualitative methods often have been left in the margins, disregarding the rich insight and understanding produced, particularly when applied to the study of diversity. Additionally, the past decade has witnessed a vast increase, in scholars and students alike, in the development and application of qualitative modes of inquiry. Alternatively, the increasing diversity in today’s society, especially in family life and education systems, has resulted in multiple calls across disciplines to expand and reframe existing theories to better explain and understand U.S. and cross-cultural diversity in the 21st Century—a primary task of qualitative inquiry. As such, the main goal of this project was to shift the margin to the center by increasing awareness of and expertise related to the myriad methods, analysis strategies, and practices offered by employing a qualitative paradigm in research. As part of this goal we have: (a) established a clearinghouse website representative of the most up-to-date and premier resources related to qualitative inquiry that would be available to all CMU faculty, staff, and students, (b) increased standards by furthering our knowledge of the diversity of qualitative methods and practices available so that we might share those with others, particularly students, and (c) increased standards related to the analysis of qualitative data. The latter is particularly important given the burgeoning array of methods, analysis strategies, and qualitative analysis software available today, in concert with those expected by funding agencies and journal editors. As these become more prominent it becomes imperative that we remain well informed and well trained. We would like to thank ORSP for a FIT Grant that made the development of this resource possible. If you have questions, comments, or materials you would like added please email Dr. Brad van Eeden-Moorefield. Enjoy the site!
